Equipment & home visits

For children and young people aged 0 to 18. Drawing on my experience in NHS children's community OT, I visit schools and homes to measure, recommend and set up the right equipment, so everyday tasks become safer and easier.

AT SCHOOL OR NURSERY

Classroom seating & set-up

  • Measuring for the right chair and table height
  • Adjustable chairs (such as the Heathfield chair), supportive seats, footrests and cushions
  • Writing slopes, pencil grips and adapted scissors
  • Showing staff how to set up equipment
  • Written recommendations for school, the SENCo or an EHCP
AT HOME

Bathing, toileting & personal care

  • Measuring your bathroom and how your child bathes or showers
  • Supportive bath seats, shower chairs and changing solutions
  • Toilet seats, steps and toileting support
  • Arranging equipment trials with specialist suppliers
  • Safe moving and handling for parents and carers
YOUR HOME

Home assessment & adaptations

  • Access, stairs, steps and safe spaces
  • Rails, ramps and other adaptations
  • Equipment for eating, dressing and daily routines
  • Reports to share with your council, school or a charity
  • Regular reviews as your child grows
WHEELCHAIR USERS

Wheelchair access at home

  • Measuring steps, thresholds and the route in for a ramp
  • Checking door widths, hallways and turning space
  • Safe transfers: wheelchair, bed, bath and car
  • What to add, move or remove so your child can get around
  • Liaising with NHS wheelchair services and the council

Getting the equipment

  • I'll recommend what your child needs and help you find the best route: NHS or council services, your child's school, a charity or buying privately.
  • Wheelchairs and complex postural seating come from NHS wheelchair services. I'm happy to support a referral.
  • For bigger changes such as a ramp or level-access shower, your council's Disabled Facilities Grant can help. For children under 18, parents' income isn't taken into account. The council usually arranges its own OT assessment, and my report can help explain your child's needs.
